Michael Markham was the second son in the family of twelve of Thomas and Honora (Honoria, née Howe) Markham. Michael had served with the Geraldine Mounted Rifles and had been discharged on account of a weak knee and the state of his lungs. He had registered for the 7th Reinforcements at Geraldine and Awapuni. He married Amelia Frances Burke in 1918. His brother John also enlisted for service in World War I.
