Biographical Notes
George Frederick Austin was fifth son of James and Mary (née Shanks) Austin, who emigrated to New Zealand from Northern Ireland after their marriage in 1863. He was drawn in the first military service ballot for No. 10 (South Canterbury) recruiting district in November 1916. George married Matilda Bartos in 1930.
