Biographical Notes

William Kernick was the fourth son of Richard and Annie (née Hatswill) Kernick. Willie, as he was known, was educated at Timaru Main School. William was called up in 1916. Draft 217, the “Zealandic”, left for New Zealand on 18 January 1919 and was due in Wellington on 28 February, carrying over 1000 men and nurses, including W. Kernick, 67532, of Timaru. He married Mabel Smith in 1920. His brother Bertie was balloted and enlisted for World War I.
