Biographical Notes
Ernest Alfred Hillyer was the son (it appears) of James Hillyer and Phoebe née Terry. James and Phoebe married in England and emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand, with children in 1874. More children were born in Otago before Arthur was born at Waimate in 1883. The 24th Reinforcements – E. A. Hillyer included - left Timaru for Trentham by the second express on 5 January 1917. They were entertained by the ladies of the Patriotic War Relief Society in Miss Read’s Stafford Tea Rooms. The 2nd (S.C.) Regimental Band was in attendance and Senior Cadets formed a cordon at the Strathallan Street crossing. Two brothers, James George and Arthur, were called up for war service.
