Edward Samuel Dunford was the youngest son of Henry (Harry) and Margaret Jane (née Cotton). Henry had arrived with his family at Lyttleton in 1851 on the "Cressy" and married Irish-born Margaret Jane in 1866 at Christchurch. Charles Christopher Dunford, a brother of Edward, served in World War I, as did two cousins - Alfred Dunford and Donald Joseph Dunford, and three nephews - Albert William Fisher, George Duncan Fisher and James McNicol Fisher.
