Biographical Notes
Stephen Laverie Sloan was the youngest son of Robert Douglas and Hannah (née Wilson) Sloan. His parents, too, spent time in New Zealand, his brother Robert Douglas Sloan, jnr, being born in Dunedin. Robert junior, enlisted with the Australian Forces and was killed in action in 1916 at the Somme. Stephen married Lilian Ida dineen on 22 July 1909 at Timaru. There they had three children. He had been twelve years in New Zealand when he enlisted. Private S. L. Sloan returned to New Zealand with Draft 187 which brought a large number of soldiers home in early October 1918.
