Biographical Notes

Patrick Murphy was the son of William and Mary Murphy of County Kilkenny, Ireland. It appears that the family was at Clomantagh, Kilkenny in 1901 and 1911, Patrick (16 years old, a labourer) there in 1901 but not in 1911. On enlistment in 1917, Patrick stated that he had been in New Zealand for 6 years. He was drawn in the ballot in April 1917. In July his name was listed as a missing reservist. But his name was supposed to have been removed from the ballot when he went into camp, his employer, Mr W. Wright, Rosewill, pointed out, giving the military authorities his service number and other details. Patrick Murphy, 47173, returned to New Zealand with Draft 187 which brought a large number of soldiers home in early October 1918. He was discharged in 8 November 1918. On 3 January 1919 in Wellington, he joined the as a Prisoners of War Repatriation Guard. He again gave his father as next-of-kin, as well as a friend, Mrs McDonald, of the Soldiers Hostel, Wellington, where Patrick was residing. This time he was overseas from 16 May 1919 until 11 August, when he was discharged.
