Biographical Notes

Matthew Mark Roseingrave was the son of Thomas and Bedelia (née Molony) Roseingrave, of Gort, County Galway, Ireland. He was educated at a Jesuit College in Galway. He went out to Australia in 1895. There he established world records in the long jump and the hop, step, and jump. He was prominent in local and international athletics for a lengthy period. He first came to New Zealand in 1900, to compete in athletics. He married Delia Cunningham in 1905 at Christchurch, and they had a son, Matthew William Mark, born in New Zealand in 1908. This son attended school in Timaru fora time. In 1917 Matt was residing in Timaru, having also spent time at Waimate. Later in 1917 Sergeant Roseingrave was a soldier doing duty with the military police in Palmerston North. on enlisting he was deemed fit for Home Service. Delia died in 1938 at Christchurch.
