Biographical Notes
George Mechen was the younger son of John and Isabella (née Thompson) Mechen. His mother died in June 1897 at Kaitangata, at the birth of her fifth child. George was educated at schools in Kaitangata, Dunedin and Timaru. G. Mechen embarked at Liverpool for the return to New Zealand per the “Tahiti”. draft no. 204, carrying 950 soldiers, reached Port Chalmers on 12 January 1919.
