Biographical Notes

Herbert Walters was the second son of John Harris and Alice Ross (née Fergusson) Walters. His mother died at Orari eight days after the birth of her twelfth child. Herbert married Mary Jane Irving in 1914; after their divorce he married Gladys Martha Brownlees.in 1922 at Christchurch. At the time of enlisting he was the manager of the Soldiers Club at Hanmer. He suffered permanent disability as a result of TB of the lung. His brother Clarence was killed in action in 1916 at the Somme. Three other brothers served in World War I - Leonard, Gordon and Sydney.
