Biographical Notes

John Kirkman was born on 29 June 1896 at Waimate, the youngest son of Thomas and Mary Jane (née Derrick) Kirkman. His father died in1911, leaving a widow and a family of eleven. His mother married William Palmer in 1915. John married (as John Samuel) to Esther Evelyn Sellars (Essie) on 2 April 1919 at Chalmers Church, Timaru. Their only son, Nevin John Kirkman, was born in 1920 at Timaru. John and Esther divorced in 1925. [See Timaru Herald, 6 Dec 1916, 4 Dec 1917, 2 April 1919, 3 April1920, 10 Dec 1920]. .
