Denis Allen was the son of Irish-born Michael and Norah Allen. He was educated at the Timaru Marist Brothers School and Timaru South School. Denis married Florence Mabel Cornelius on 24 October 1910 at Timaru. Their first daughter, Nora Eileen, was born in 1910 at Wellington, and the second, Helen, was born in 1915 at Wellington.
