Biographical Notes

Herbert Joseph yates was the son of William Melville and Elizabeth Archibald (née Robertson?) Yates. His parents were in New Zealand before July 1889. His father was a schoolmaster who was employed in several South Canterbury schools. Herbert was educated at Fairlie, Kohika and Rangitata Station schools. Herbert married Elizabeth Cook in 1921. His brother, Frederick George Yates was killed in action on 25 April 1915 at Anzac Cove. Another brother, Arthur William Yates, also served in World War
