Biographical Notes
Frederick Hughes Meagher, born on 10 December 1888 at Waimate, was the second of the four sons of Martin Joseph and Emily (née Hughes) Meagher. His schoolmaster father died in 1895, and his mother remarried in 1899, to Henry Harris Edwards. Fred was educated at St Patrick's School, Waimate, where he received prizes for Standard VI arithmetic and writing in February 1903. He was initially rejected as unfit for the Military Forces on account of varicose veins.
