Biographical Notes

James William Hunter was born on 2 April 1896 at Waimate, the son of Alexander Heenan Hunter and his second wife, Ellen née Horgan. His father died the year before James enlisted. Iin April 1918 it was reported that James had been wounded. Perhaps this was when he lost a finger. James was probably a cousin of Alfred Francis Horgan and Benjamin Joseph Horgan who enlisted for World War One.
