Biographical Notes

Timothy Nelligan was born in Abbey-faele, County Limerick, Ireland on 2 February 1876, to Francis and Catherine Nelligan (nee Nolan).

Timothy's brother Francis also resided in New Zealand by the time of the First World War, and likely other brothers - Daniel, and Michael. He was working in South Canterbury as a labourer when he enlisted on 10 February 1915. He gave his next of kin as his brother Francis Nelligan, publican at Nelligan’s Railway Hotel, Pleasant Point. Timothy was described as 38 years old, single, Roman Catholic, 5ft 7in, 140lb, medium complexion, with grey eyes. He gave his address as the Gladstone Hotel, Maclaggan Street, Dunedin, and his last employer as the NZ Government Railways.

Timothy was attested on 29 May 1915 and embarked at Wellington on 9 October as a rifleman with B Company, NZ Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion. Nelligan took part in the Gallipoli and Western Front campaigns. In September 1916 in France he received a gunshot wound to his left arm, and sent to England to recover. He was discharged on 13 May 1917 as no longer physically fit for duty with ongoing paralysis in his left hand as a result of his wounds. He had served one year 350 days. He received British War Medal, Victory Medal, and 1914-1915 Star for his service.

In the 1925 electoral roll Timothy Nelligan was listed as gaving become a tally clerk living at 1 Barnard St, Timaru. He died 24 April 1948 and is buried in Timaru Cemetery.
