Biographical Notes
Alexander James McIntosh Cross was born in Rugby, Warwickshire, England, the only son of George and Rebecca (née McIntosh) Cross, and baptised on 28 September 1884 at St Matthew's, Rugby, the church where his parents had married the year before. By 1886 George, Rebecca and young Alex were in Timaru, New Zealand, where their only daughter was born.
