Biographical Notes

Robert Allan Bruce, known as Allan, was the son of Arthur Shackleton and Helen Mary (née Ladbrooke) Bruce. He started at Esk Valley School and transferred to Fernside School in North Canterbury at the age of six. Temporary Corporal A. R. Bruce, of Kakahu Bush, returned to New Zealand from Egypt per the troopship “Ellenga”, embarking at Suez on 23 July 1919 and arriving in late August. He married Fanny Augusta Elizabeth Dixon in 1923.
