Biographical Notes
Oswyne RICHARDSON was born Oswyne Newton CALVERT in 1892 at Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, the son of Albert Boston and Eliza (nee NEWTON) CALVERT. He was living at home in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, with his parents and siblings, in 1901. In 1911 he was a boarder, still in Sculcoates, and working as a clerk in the dried fruit trade. Oswyne married Edith SHARPE in 1919 at St Swithin's Lincoln. By 1928 Oswyne and his wife Edith were back in Timaru (this time as CALVERT), where he was working as a lorry driver, and a couple of years later as a bookseller. He was again in 1946 in Lincoln where he died in 1980, at the great age of 88 years. Oswyne may have come to New Zealand soon after his father's death on 4 March 1914. In Timaru, Oswyne enrolled and passed the examination on 12 August 1914, in a very lively and busy Drill Shed; he was not one of those rejected because they were over age or under age, insufficiently developed, had no experience, or were over weight (the regulation weight was 12 stone).
