Biographical Notes
Frederick, born on 9 December 1894 at Green Island Bush, Dunedin, was the eight son of Robert and Margaret Sprott of Momona, Dunedin.
Frederick was educated at the Caversham School. He was employed as a farmer by Mr J. Bruce of Momona, where he was well known, before enlisting and heading to the Dardenelles. At Gallipoli he was severely wounded in the left leg and lower abdomen, sometime between 7 and 9 August 1915 - during the same action that one of his old school masters (Corporal Kennedy) was wounded. Admitted to to the 15th General Hospital 13 August, Frederick had his left leg amputated. Unfortunately he eventually succumbed to his wounds almost three months later.
Two of his brothers also served and fell. George Sprott (8/1641) was killed in action on 8 October 1918. Percy George Sprott (8/1642), who also embarked with the Third Reinforcements, died only months before Frederick on 9 August 1915.
