Biographical Notes
Richard Naughton was born at Kerrytown on 7 May 1892, the sixth son of William and Annie Naughton.
He enlisted on 17 November 1915, at that time working as a ploughman for PL Wareing of Fairlie, and gave his previous address Kerrytown. He was described as single, Roman Catholic, 6ft 1in, 163lbs, of dark complexion, with grey eyes, and dark brown hair. He was attached to the 10th Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Coy and embarked for Suez and Egypt at Wellington on 4 March 1916. He disembarked at Suez on 10 April 1916, but immediately re-embarked for France on 13 April and was attached to the strength in Etaples, France on the 24th. Naughton’s time at the front was short. He was wounded in action on 1 October 1916 with a gunshot wound to his back and put onto the hopital ship Maheno for England on 5 October. He was admitted to hospital in Oxford on 8 October, but died of his wounds on 16 October 1916.
Richaed is buried at Botley Cemetery, Oxford, England. His will had named his sister, Miss K. Naughton of Kerrytown as his legatee.
