Lance Corporal George Black — According to his service records, George was promoted to Lance Corporal on 20 May 1915. In March 1916 he was further promoted to Corporal, but reverted to ranks the next day. He was again promoted in May 1916 to Lance Corporal, then Corporal and finally Sergeant in September. Biographical Notes

George Black was the son of Mr and Mrs George Black, of Tabletop, Hakataramea.

George's great nephew, J Ware, recounted: "His nephew,Bernard Black told me he was escorting two Germans, who had surrendered, when he was shot by a sniper. George’s name is recorded in The Scottish National War Memorial. This is located in Edinburgh Castle."
