Health problems (Locomotor Ataxis, a pre-war condition) resulted in him being found medically unfit and he left France for England 25 Sep 1917 and admitted to hospital for treatment. He departed Liverpool 2 Feb 1918 on the "Maunganui" for NZ arriving 19 Mar 1918. Further service in NZ was from 19 Mar 1918 until 16 Apr 1918. He was again medically boarded at the Timaru Army Hall 6 May 1918 and finally discharged as medically unfit for further military duties.

His NZ address was given as Waihao Down South Canterbury. He died in the Waimate Hospital from influenza on 28 Nov 1918 and is buried in the Waimate Cemetery.
