Biographical Notes

William Blamires was born on 14 May 1892 at Waimate, the youngest of the four sons of George and Margaret (née Derrick) Blamires. William was drawn in the ballot for war service. Residing at Waimate, he was a labourer for Mr Cochrane at Waituna when he enlisted on 25 January 1917 at Timaru. Single and of Church of England affiliation, he named his father as next-of-kin – Mr G. Blamires, Waimate, South Canterbury. W. Blamires was one of the men who left Waimate by the first express, en route for Trentham, on 13 February 1917. Some weeks after he was posted to the 25th Reinforcements, the Medical Board assembled at Trentham proposed his discharge on account of varicose veins.

In 1933 William married Florence Mary Blamires, an English-born relative. He died on 9 January 1970 at Timaru, aged 77 years and was buried in the Waimate Lawn Cemetery. Florence died nine years later and was buried with him.
