Biographical Notes

Edward Nohelty was born on 8 August 1883 at Ashburton, the second son of Edward and Julia (née O’Connell) who had married in 1876 at Christchurch. As a young man, Edward, junior, had a few brushes with the law. His father died in 1905 and his mother in 1911.

When he enlisted on 22 November 1915 at Trentham, he was a labourer at Timaru, single and Roman Catholic. He named his brother as next-of-kin – Leonard Nohelty, Timaru. Leonard had already embarked, however, on 14 August 1915. Rifleman E. Nohelty embarked for Suez, Egypt, on 4 March 1916 per the “Willochra”. E. Nohelty, 23/2522, returned to New Zealand by a small draft which was on the ex-German Liner Adolf Woermann, leaving from Plymouth on 14 August 1919 and disembarking at Wellington on 1 October 1919. He was discharged on 31 October 1919, on the termination of his term of engagement.

Edward Nohelty died on 15 November 1943 at Ashburton, aged 60 years, and was buried at Ashburton Cemetery where a services stone marks his grave. “Mr Edward Nohelty, aged 59, retired, of the Triangle, Ashburton, died suddenly last evening. He was found dead in an armchair at the back door of his home at about 6.45 p.m.” His brother Leonard Nohelty who also served in World War, was only 34 years old when he died, probably as a consequence of his war service.
