Biographical Notes

John Norman Reilly was born on 10 July 1882 at Timaru, the eldest child of Cecil Charles Frodsham Reilly and Sarah Ann née Nixon. In about 1896, the family moved to Kawhatau in the North Island. John enlisted on 18 October 1915 at Trentham. He was a labourer and single, his address P.O., Taihape. He named his sister Gretchen as next-of-kin – Mrs G. Campbell, Kawhatau, Mangaweka.

Trooper J. N. Reilly embarked with the Otago Mounted Rifles of the 9th Reinforcements, departing for Suez, Egypt per the “Dalmore” on 14 January 1916. After serving in Egypt and Western Europe for more than three years, he embarked for the return to New Zealand per the “Tahiti” on 27 May 1919. He was discharged on 3 August 1919, on the termination of his period of engagement, and awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

John Norman Reilly married Sarah McCoard on 15 January 1925. Their daughter, Lorna Beatrice, was born later that year. John died on 7 June 1959, at Palmerston North (of Tititea), aged 76 years. He was buried at Kelvin Grove Cemetery, Palmerston North, a services stone marking his grave. Sarah who had died in 1943 was also buried at Kelvin Grove.
