Biographical Notes
Benjamin Disraeli Nixon was born on 28 May 1896 at Dunedin, the younger son of Charles Stafford and Annie Louisa (née Grimes) Nixon. Charles and Annie married in 1889 at Wanganui. Charles was a collector of customs, his occupation taking him to several parts of the country. Benjamin was educated at Arthur Street School in Dunedin, then came with his family to Timaru in 1901, where he was enrolled at Timaru Main School, with a one-term stint at Timaru South. The family stayed at Timaru for six years. Benjamin followed his older brother to Nelson College, while his three sisters continued their education at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Timaru. His father died at Wellington in August 1912, when Benjamin was at Nelson College, his brother Stafford then in Australia. His mother and three sisters all moved to Australia in due course, Benjamin following.
Benjamin Disraeli Nixon enlisted with the Australian Forces on 18 August 1917 at Liverpool, New South Wales. A clerk, 21 years old, single and of Church of England affiliation, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Annie Nixon, 28 Macleay Street, Potts Point, Sydney, New South Wales. Benjamin was also residing at this address. Embarking at Sydney on 31 October 1917, Private Nixon disembarked at Devonport on 26 December. It was 31 May 1919 when Gunner Nixon embarked for the return to Australia per the “Aeneas”. He was discharged on 13 July 1919 and was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Benjamin married Ethel Mary Johnson in 1919 at Sydney, New South Wales. He died at Sydney on 8 December 1962, aged 66 years. His brother Charles Stafford Nixon also served in World War One with the Australian Forces.
