Biographical Notes
John Archibald McInnes, the son of Daniel and Lucy Harriet (née Benbow) McInnes, was born on 19 June 1896 at Temuka. John was educated at Temuka School.
He was a chauffeur at Wallacetown near Invercargill when he was called up in 1916. Single and Presbyterian, he named his father as next-of-kin – Mr D. McInnes, 85 Denmark Street, Temuka. He was serving with the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment and had been discharged medically unfit from the 10th Reinforcements N.Z.E.F. Enlisting first on 17 November 1915 at Featherston, he had been admitted to hospital suffering from rheumatism on 14 April 1916 while at Featherston. He was then attached to the permanent band. After enlisting on 7 December 1916 at Invercargill, he was medically examined at Timaru on 23 April 1918. Posted to the 41st Reinforcements on 29 April 1918, Private McInnes was granted leave with pay from 13th to 19th June 1918. Promoted to the rank of corporal on 6 December 1918, he was granted leave with pay on demobilization on 25 June 1919. In May 1917, his name appeared briefly on the Temuka Leader’s Active Service List – Trooper J. A. McInnes, 10th Reinforcements.
John Archibald McInnes married Ethel Florence Sharp in 1929. He died at Levin on 10 February 1980, aged 83 years. Ethel had died ten years prior.
