Biographical Notes
Harold William Sherratt was born on 28 August 1897 at Geraldine, the first-born child and only son of William George and Eva Ellen (née Smith) Sherratt. He was educated at Geraldine District High School, his four sisters joining him there. Harold enlisted at Ashburton on 13 September 1917, volunteering for the 34th Reinforcements. He was a clerk with the C.F.C.A. Ltd at Geraldine. Single and Methodist, he named his father sister as next-of-kin – Mr W. G. Sherratt, Geraldine. He served with No. 40 Company Senior Cadets and the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment and had been and instructor with the Cadets for four years. Sergeant H. D. Sherratt embarked with the 43rd Reinforcements, departing for London, England, on 2 October 1918 per the “Matatua”. The Hororata’s draft which was due at Wellington on or about 20 September 1919, brought home Corporal H. W. Sherratt, 64916, of Geraldine. He was discharged on 21 October 1919, on the termination of his period of engagement and received the British War Medal. Harold Sherratt married Mabel Lillian Hare in 1921. He served in the Home Guard in World War Two. Harold William Sherratt died at his home (90 The Ridgeway, Stoke, Nelson) on 20 June 1971, aged 73 years. He was cremated at the Nelson Crematorium. He was survived by Mabel who died in 1989, and two sons. A daughter predeceased him.
