Biographical Notes
Norman Andrew Lothian Macdonald was born on 7 November 1897 at Port Chalmers, the son of Stewart and Mary Margaret (née Solomon) Macdonald. His early education was at Karitane School, with about eight months at Port Chalmers in 1904. At the age of thirteen he went to the Dunedin Technical School, moving to evening class in 1913.
Norman enlisted at Dunedin on 15 November 1917, just after his 20th birthday. He was a civil engineer and residing at Carey’s Bay. Single and Presbyterian, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Mary Margaret Macdonald, Carey’s Bay, Port Chalmers, Otago. Before long his parents were at 14 Elizabeth Street, Timaru, where his father was employed by the Harbour Board. Norman was serving with the Garrison Artillery. Gunner N. A L. MacDonald embarked with the New Zealand Field Artillery of the 43rd Reinforcements, departing for London, England, on 2 October 1918 per the “Matatua”. The Hororata’s draft which was due at Wellington on or about 20 September 1919, brought home N. A. L. Macdonald, 74673, of Timaru. He was discharged on 21 October 1919, on the termination of his period of engagement and received the British War Medal.
Norman was probably a witness to the marriage of his sister, Alice Myrtle Macdonald, in February 1920 at Chalmers Church, Timaru. Norman married Hazel Simpson in 1922. He died on 26 September 1960 at Dunedin, aged 62 years. Hazel died in 1981. Both were cremated at Andersons Bay, their ashes scattered.
