Biographical Notes

Lionel Ross Hayes was born on 13 December 1895 at Oamaru, the younger son of Theodore Porter Hayes (Porter) and Elizabeth Florence née Ross. Porter, from Southland, and Elizabeth, of Oamaru, married in 1884 at Oamaru. They lived for a few years at Mabel Bush, Southland, moving in 1887 to Hakataramea where Porter managed Normanvale for upwards of ten years. In 1900 they were at Oamaru and by 1902 at Timaru. Lionel was educated at Oamaru Middle School, Teaneraki School near Oamaru, Timaru South School and Waimataitai School, Timaru. In February 1902, Lionel and his older sister Myrtle Hayes transferred to Timaru South School, and in 1904 Lionel transferred to Waimataitai School. The youngest of the family (Rita Tui Hayes), who was born at Timaru, started at Waimataitai in 1911, transferring to Northcote, Auckland, in 1914. Lionel Hayes was awarded Merit in the Infant Department of Oamaru Middle School in 1899. He was first equal in drawing and in brush drawing at Waimataitai School in 1906. He received a special prize for brush work.

Lionel enlisted on 19 October 1915 at Trentham. A surveyor’s assistant, residing with is parents, and single, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Porter Hayes, The Nook, Northcote, Auckland. Rifleman L. R. Hayes embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade of the 3rd Reinforcements, departing from Wellington for Suez, Egypt, on 8 January 1916, per the “Tahiti”. Sergeant L. R. Hayes returned home by Draft 234 which was expected at Auckland about 24 april 1919. After more than three years of service overseas in Egypt and Western Europe, Lionel was discharged on 23 May 1919. He married English-born Doris Eugenie Maunder in New Zealand in 1926. Doris had come to New Zealand with her parents. For some years they lived in the Auckland area, Lionel disappearing after 1931 and Doris after 1943. Was Lionel into yachting? Did he go off to the Second World War? Doris Eugenie Hayes died in New Zealand in December 1987 and was cremated at Hamilton.

Lionel’s brother, Charles Wesley (William) Hayes, also served in World War One, dying of influenza in 1919. Elizabeth Hayes died at her Auckland residence in June 1924, at which time Lionel was in Tahiti, and Porter Hayes died at a private hospital in April 1936. They were buried at O’Neill’s Point Cemetery, Takapuna.
