Biographical Notes

John Herbert Ogg, known as Jack, was born on 10 November 1889 at Timaru, the second of the three sons of William and Esther Wilhelmina (née Tapp) Ogg. He was educated at Waimataitai School, where in 1903 he was rewarded for Standard V proficiency and drawing. His younger brother, Frederick William Ogg, died in June 1901 when he fell from a dray. His mother died in 1904, and his older brother, Arthur George Ogg, died in 1908. His father died in 1927, survived by the only daughter, Winifred Mary, and John Herbert.

John enlisted on 20 October 1914 at Trentham. A saddler, single and Anglican, he named his father as next-of-kin – Mr William Ogg, Waimataitai, Timaru. Mrs M. Hedges, his aunt, 63 Clonburn Road, Remuera, Auckland, was also to be advised. John’s address was A. W. Hedges, Clonburn Road, Remuera, Auckland. These were surely Arthur William Hedges and Minnie Maria Maud née Tapp who had married in 1887 at St Mary’s Timaru. Gunner J. H. Ogg embarked with the New Zealand Field Artillery of the 2nd Reinforcements, departing from Wellington on 14 December 1914. Sergeant J. H. Ogg, of Timaru, returned by the “Port Melbourne” (No. 219) which arrived on 9 March 1919, and was discharged on 11 April 1919. He had served in all theatres of war and was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

John Herbert Ogg was in Remuera when he married Inez Victoria Garry on 17 July 1929 at All Saints’ Church. Inez died on 15 January 1952 at Aotea Private Hospital and was buried at Hillsborough Cemetery with her mother. John Herbert Ogg died on 26 April 1965 at Auckland. He was cremated at Purewa, his ashes being interred with Inez and his regimental number inscribed on the headstone. There would appear to be no issue of the marriage. John’s next-of-kin at death was Mr Hedges, a cousin. His cousin, Neville Walter Hedges, also served in World War One.
