Biographical Notes

Thomas George Waugh was the youngest of the nine children of James and Mary (née Strachan) Waugh. He was born on 7 March 1880 at Highcliff, Dunedin. His father died in 1902 and his mother in 1911. Along with some of his siblings, Thomas was educated at Highcliff School. There in 1886, he received first prize in the Preparatory Class. Thomas resided for some years in Dunedin with his widowed mother and some of his siblings, particularly his sisters Agnes and Jessie.

Before 1914 he had moved to a labouring position at Hazelburn, and that was his address on enlisting on 17 December 1914 at Trentham. Single and Presbyterian, he named his sister as next-of-kin – Miss Jessie Waugh , care of S. C. Seelye, Dowling Street, Dunedin. “Private Thomas Waugh, of Hazelburn, left by second express on Saturday to join the reinforcements at Trentham. He was given a hearty send off by a large number of friends.” [Timaru Herald, 15 December 1914.] Trooper T. G. Waugh embarked with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles of the 3rd Reinforcements, departing from Wellington for Suez, Egypt, on 14 February 1915. In December 1918, Thomas Waugh was on his way home by Draft 200. He was discharged on 17 January 1919 after four years of service. For his service in all theatres of war he was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Thomas returned to Hazelburn for a short time, moving back to Dunedin and residing again with his sisters. In 1928 he was at “Rugged Ridges”, Kurow, the residence of his sister Mary Munro and her husband. He had worked there prior to the war also. He was in Dunedin when he signed up for World War Two. By 1954 he was resident at Beverley War Veterans’ Home, Timaru. Thomas George Waugh died on 11 August 1959, aged 79. He probably died at Timaru. His personnel file records Kurow, his next-of kin being his nephew, Mr G. Munro, Rugged Ridges, Kurow. The burial record suggests Timaru – Resident of Beverley War Veterans Home, Timaru; Last came from Timaru. His death was registered at Dunedin. He was buried with his parents and two sisters at Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin. Thomas had been predeceased by all his siblings. His brother Joseph who lived in South Canterbury for many years, died in 1953 and was buried at Pleasant Point with his wife. Joseph was a carter at Timaru and a married man with two children when he was listed on the Reserve Rolls in 1917.
