Biographical Notes
Frederick Vernon Horne, known as Fred, was born on 21 September 1888 at Dunedin, the elder son of Frederick Thomas and Mary Sophia (née Muir) Horne. Fred started at Caversham School, Dunedin, transferring to Waimataitai School, Timaru, when the family moved in October 1899. At Caversham he featured in the Standard II Merit list in 1897.
He enlisted on 9 February 1915 at Trentham. He had served 8½ years with the Timaru Volunteers. A painter, single and of Church of England affiliation, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Mary Sophia Horne, care of Mrs Little, 58 Central Terrace, Kelburn, Wellington. Mrs Horne was afterwards at various addresses, including Timaru. Gunner F. V. Horne embarked with the New Zealand Field Artillery of the 4th Reinforcements, leaving from Wellington on 17 April 1917. While in England, F. V. Horne represented the NZEF in rowing events on the Thames in August 1919 and at Henley in September 1919.
The troopship Tainui, which was expected to arrive in Wellington on 21 September 1919, brought home Sergeant-Major F. V. Horne, of Timaru. He intended to go to C/o Mrs M. S. Horne, Hatton Street, Timaru. He was discharged on 21 October 1919, having given 4 years and 258 days of service, 4 years and 160 days of that overseas. For his service in the Balkans, Egypt and Western Europe, he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Frederick Vernon Horne married Linda Florence Baldwin in late 1923. “A quiet wedding was solemnised at the residence of the bride’s parents, “Silure,” 72 Aikman’s Road, Merivale, Christchurch, recently, when Linda Florence, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Baldwin, was married to Frederick Vernon, eldest son of Mrs M. S. Horne, Timaru, and of the late Mr F. Horne. . . . . . Later, Mr and Mrs F. V. Horne left for Auckland on their honeymoon trip.” Fred and Linda lived in various parts of the country, following the occupation of hotel keeper.
Frederick Vernon Horne died on 20 October 1964 at Greenlane Hospital, Auckland, aged 76 years. He was cremated and his ashes interred at Purewa Cemetery, Auckland. Linda had died in June 1952 and was cremated at Waikumete, her ashes being scattered. Both Fred’s parents were buried at Timaru, his father in 1922 and his mother in 1927.
