Biographical Notes
John Cuthbert Daly was born on 31 May 1893 at Bootle, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, the son of John Joseph and Emily (née Potter) Daly. He was baptised on 6 December 1906 at St Peter’s, Liverpool, the family living at Mount Pleasant. In 1901 John was in Liverpool with his widowed mother and widowed maternal grandmother. John Joseph Daly may have died on 26 January 1894, aged 36 years, and been buried at St Austin’s Churchyard, Grassendale, Liverpool. By 1914 young John was in New Zealand, a bank clerk at Kurow. In fact, J. C. Daly was playing cricket for Kurow in January 1912. And in September 1914 he was receiving Kurow contributions towards te Belgian Relief Fund.
J. C. Daly, of Timaru, was one of the registrations at the Timaru Defence Office on 20 June 1916. South Canterbury’s quota for the Nineteenth Reinforcements left for camp on 26 July 1916. The South Canterbury military district was congratulated on being able to send forward a full quota – 104 men. A civic farewell took place – luncheon in Stafford Tea Rooms and speeches at the Drill Shed. Enlisting on 26 July 1916 at Awapuni, John Daly named an aunt as next-of-kin – Mrs Minnie Matheson, care of C.P.O., Auckland. Minnie was born Minnie Potter, a sister of John’s mother. She married Donald Matheson in 1893 in New Zealand. Donald was one of several Matheson brothers from Argyll, Scotland, who farmed in the Kurow district. He was then a bank clerk with the National Bank at Timaru, his address being Glanavon, Sarah Street, Timaru. Private J. C. Daly embarked with the New Zealand Medical Corps of the 19th Reinforcements, departing from Wellingto for Plymouth, England, on 15 November 1916. He disembarked at Devonport on 29 January 1917 and left Sling for France on 4 March 1917. John Cuthbert Daly took his discharge on 31 December 1919 in the UK. He received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service.
John Cuthbert Daly was back in New Zealand in 1928, working as a secretary, his address being care of Auckland Infirmary. He married Freda Mary Frances Lawrence in 1933. He and Freda lived in Auckland. He died on 18 June 1955 at Auckland and was cremated at Waikumete. Fred lived on till 1987.
