Biographical Notes

James John Haynes was born on 9 June 1897 at Waimate, the younger son of William and Jessie Pearcy (née Hare) Haynes. He was baptised on 21 July 1897 at St Augustine’s Church, Waimate. William enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, doing so on 6 October 1914 at Timaru. He was already serving with the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment when he enlisted on 18 September 1917 at Timaru. A shepherd, single and of Church of England affiliation, he was residing at Whakamatau (care of T. Pollock). His nominated next-of-kin was his mother – Mrs W. Haynes, Studholme Junction, South Canterbury.

Private J. J. Haynes embarked with the Wellington Infantry Regiment of the 33rd Reinforcements, departing from Wellington on 31 December 1917 and disembarking at Glasgow, Scotland, on 26 February 1918. Draft 224 (“Ajana”) was to arrive at Auckland on 25 or 26 March 1919, 58521 J. J. Haynes, of Studholme Junction, listed among the 888 returnees. A welcome home for J. Haynes, six fellow soldiers and Sister A. Buckley was held in a barn at Hook in mid April. The barn was prettily decorated with flags and greenery. The night was beautifully fine and motors and traps came from as far as Waimate and Otaio. On being introduced, Sister Buckley received well deserved applause, as she had volunteered for service at the beginning of the war. Each one was presented with a nicely inscribed gold medal and cheered heartily. After dancing until the early hours of the morning, singing and refreshments, “Auld Lang Syne” brought the proceedings to a close. Rifleman Haynes was discharged on 25 April 1919 and was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

James John Haynes died on 10 December 1976 at Timaru, aged 79 years, and was buried at the Waimate Cemetery, a services plaque marking his grave. His older brother, Thomas William Haynes, was killed in action on 12 October 1917 at Passchendaele.
