Biographical Notes
Edward Lewis Hampton was born on 31 July 1888 at Ashburton, the eldest son of John and Sarah Jane (née Smith) Hampton. The family had moved to Waihao Downs near Waimate by 1914, and Edward was a farm labourer there. He was a farmer at Waihaorunga when he enlisted, naming his father as next-of-kin – John Hampton, Waihao Downs, Waimate.
Trooper E. L. Hampton embarked with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles of the 9thy Reinforcements, departing from Wellington for Suez, Egypt, on 8 January 1916 by the “Maunganui”. On 7 Aptil 1917 at the West Ham Registry Office, Edward married Eileen O’Shea, who then became his next-of-kin. E. L. Hampton, 7/2022, returned to New Zealand by the “Adolf Woermann”, which was expected at Wellington on 28 September 1919. He was discharged on 31 October 1919 and was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service in Egypt and Western Europe. The name of E. L. Hampton appeared regularly on the Waimate Daily Advertiser Roll of Honour under the sub-title of Answered the Call. There is no indication that Eileen came to New Zealand.
Edward returned to farming at Waihao Downs, but after he married Bessie May Langrish in 1925, they lived in Christchurch, where he was employed as a surfaceman. Edward Lewis Hampton died on 7 July 1971 at Christchurch, aged 82 years, Like Bessie who had died in 1962, he was cremated at the Canterbury Crematorium. They were survived by three sons. A daughter, Patricia May, died in infancy.
