Biographical Notes
Frederick John Stanley Margetts was the youngest son of Thomas and Sarah Ann (née Carter) Margetts. He was born on 26 February 1889 at Christchurch, and was educated at West Christchurch School, leaving in 1903, probably to work with his father. Fred, as he may have been known, married Lilian Regina Cox, of Timaru, on 29 October 1915 at Christchurch. On enlisting on 18 May 1917, he named his wife as next-of-kin – Mrs L. R. Margetts, 62 King Street, Timaru. He was an electrician and Methodist. Private F. J. S. Margetts embarked with the Specialist Company of the 34th Reinforcements, departing on 8 February 1918 for Liverpool, England, per the “Ulimaroa”. F. J. S. Margetts, of Timaru, returned to New Zealand by the “Tainui” in April 1919. Frederick John Stanley Margetts died on 20 October 1974 at Christchurch, aged 85 years. Lilian died in 1980 at Nelson and was cremated there.
