Biographical Notes
Leslie Wright Lord was born on 8 November 1897 at Geraldine, the son of Thomas Wright Lord and his second wife, Rose née Fenn. Thomas’ first wife, Emily Jane, died in 1896, leaving him with several young children. In 1896 he married Rose and they were to have four children. All the children of both marriages were born at Geraldine where some of them died young. Leslie was educated at Geraldine School, where he enjoyed success. He also received prizes at the Geraldine Presbyterian Sunday School. At the Geraldine Goodwill Band of Hope meeting held in August 1907, he presented The Drunkard’s Farewell”. In January 1912 Leslie had two bones broken in his forearm in a freak accident involving a horse and a gate.
A painter and single, he was residing at Geraldine when he enlisted. He named his father as next-of-kin – Thomas Wright Lord, Talbot Street, Geraldine. Rifleman L. Lord embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, leaving Wellington for Plymouth, England, by the “Mokia” on 13 February 1917. One of 968 men in Returning Draft No. 273, L. Lord, of Geraldine, returned to New Zealand by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton on or about 12 August 1919.
Leslie resumed his work as a painter. He married Annie Margaret Dowling in 1931. Annie died in 1972 and Leslie on 21 August 1974 at Christchurch, aged 76 years. They are buried in Waimairi Cemetery, Christchurch. His mother died in July 1924 and his father in December 1937. Two half-brothers also served in World War One – Herbert Lord and Ernest wright Lord.
