Biographical Notes
John Grant was born on 7 February 1888 at Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, the eldest son of William Downie and Elizabeth (née Angus) Grant. John and his older sister, Elizabeth, were at home with their parents at Arden, Dumbartonshire, in 1891. Both were still at home in 1901, John a scholar, but the family, with four more children, was at “Hoggbridge”, Peebles, Peeblesshire. When John enlisted with the New Zealand Forces on 30 October 1916 at Timaru, he was single and Presbyterian. A farm hand for C. J. Talbot, Fairlie, he named his father as next-of-kin – William D. Grant, Hoggbridge, Peebles. He also recorded his friend – C. J. Talbot, Tahuna, Fairlie.
Private J. Grant embarked with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment of the 23rd Reinforcements, leaving for Plymouth, England, by the “Corinthic” on 2 April 1917. One of 968 men in Returning Draft No. 273, J. Grant, of Fairlie, returned to New Zealand by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton on or about 12 August 1919. He was discharged on 17 September 1919.
His father died on 20 April 1938 at Helensburgh and was buried in St Andrews Cemetery, Peebles. His mother was buried there in 1953, their daughter Elizabeth in 1969 and their daughter Mary in 1905.
