Biographical Notes

Neil Ramsay was born on 9 September 1882 at Kaiapoi, the youngest son of Alexander (Alex) and Mary Margaret (née Edwards) Ramsay. His father died in 1887 after being thrown from his horse. Neil married Louisa Jane Maddren in 1911. Their first son was born in 1912 at Rangiora, the second in 1915 at Temuka. The family moved to Christchurch where he was a butcher, enlisting on 26 September 1916 and naming his wife as next-of-kin – Louisa Jane Ramsay, 9 Hood Street, New Brighton, and later at Winchester.

Corporal N. Ramsay embarked on 13 February 1917 with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, leaving from Wellington for Plymouth, England, per the “Mokoia”. N. Ramsay returned to New Zealand by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton about 12 August 1919. He was headed for Winchester, where his eldest son had several stints of schooling from 1918 till 1922. Three more children were born in Christchurch after the war.

Neil died on 22 August 1956 at Christchurch, aged 74 years, and was buried in the Ruru Lawn Cemetery, Louisa with him in 1964.
