Biographical Notes

Colin Campbell McLauchlan was born on 28 February 1895 at Cust, Canterbury, the fourth son of James and Elizabeth (née Whiteside) McLachlan. His mother died in 1901 at Cust and his father in 1914. Colin was educated at Summerhill, Cust and Springbank schools in Canterbury., before going to the North Island when he was twelve. When he enlisted on 21 October 1915, he was a carrier at Kawhia. He was serving with the 4th Waikato Mounted Rifles. He named his eldest brother as next-of-kin – Mr A. McLauchlan, Timaru Road, Waimate. Andrew had married at Waimate in 1910 and lived there thereafter. Trooper C. C. McLauchlan embarked on 8 January 1916 with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles of the 9th Reinforcements, leaving from Wellington for Suez, Egypt, per the “Maunganui”. C. C. McLauchlan returned to New Zealand by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton about 12 August 1919. He was headed for Waimate. Colin married Annie Falconer in 1922 at Masterton. He died on 20 November 1981 at Masterton, aged 86 years, and was buried in the Ex Servicemen’s Area of the Arthur Street Cemetery at Masterton. Annie had died in 1974. Their older son, Hector Campbell McLauchlan, lost his life in World War Two, on 13 January 1944, just 20 years old. Two brothers of Colin were listed in the Reserve Rolls – Andrew McLauchlan and Leonard Cameron McLauchlan.
