Biographical Notes
Robert Stanley Linn Latta was born on 26 October 1897 at Taylorville, West Coast, the eldest of the thirteen children of Robert and Helen (née Patterson) Latta. A sawmill hand when he enlisted, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs H. Latta, North Road, Oamaru. Private S. R. Latta embarked on 9 May 1918 with the 37th Reinforcements, leaving for Liverpool, England, by the “Maunganui”. S. R. Latta returned to New Zealand by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton about 12 August 1919. He was headed for Timaru where his parents had been since 1918. Stanley died on 18 May 1964 at Dunedin, aged 66 years. He was buried at Andersons Bay Cemetery where a services plaque marks his grave.
