Biographical Notes
Alick Groom was born on 28 December 1880 at St Pancras, London, England, the son of William and Clara Ann (née Brasier) Groom. In 1881, 1891 and 1901 Alick was at home in England. He came to New Zealand in about 1910 and married Mary Sugrue in 1917. Enlisting on 11 July 1917, he named his wife as next-of-kin – Mrs Mary Groom, 10 Tonks Street, North New Brighton Christchurch. Alick was a clerk residing at the same address.
Private A. Groom embarked with the Specialist Company of the 34th Reinforcements on 8 February 1918, leaving by the “Ulimaroa” for Liverpool, England. A. Groom returned to New Zealand by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton about 12 August 1919. He was headed for Timaru where Mary was residing with Mrs Sugrue, probably her mother. Alick died on 15 May 1976 at Christchurch. His ashes were interred at Ruru Cemetery with Mary who had died in 1969. They were survived by three sons – Harold, Peter and John.
