Biographical Notes
Francis Barclay Woodhead was born on 21 August 1891 at Milford, Temuka, the youngest son of Joseph (Joe) and Agnes (née Cain) Woodhead. Joseph and Agnes married in 1973 and from then the family lived at Springbank Farm at Milford. His father died in 1893 and his mother carried on the farm until her death in 1927. Along with all his siblings, he was educated at Milford School near Temuka. His name was drawn in the Eighth Ballot and he enlisted on 26 June 1917 at Timaru. A farmer and single, he named his mother as next-of-kin - Mrs Agnes Woodhead, Spring Bank Farm, Ohape, Temuka. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. He died on 7 May 1966, of “Springbank”, aged 74 years, and was buried in the Temuka Cemetery. His brother, Joseph Stanley Coira Woodhead, also enlisted. Neither served overseas.
