Biographical Notes
Stanley Alfred George Jones was born on 19 November 1892 in Canterbury, New Zealand, the youngest son of Charles and Jane (née Barnes) Jones. He was educated at Oamaru North and Oamaru Middle schools and at Christchurch East School. On 9 November 1911 at Waimate, William married Bertha Hilda Walker. Their son, William Herbert Jack, was born on 10 Sseptember 1912 at Waimate. He was a garage proprietor at Fairlie when he enlisted on 3 May 1917 at Timaru, his name having been drawn in the Sixth Ballot in April 1917. He named his mother as next-of-kin - Mrs Jane Jones, 57 Rugby Street, Papanui, Christchurch. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. It appears that this was his second move to camp. On 14 August 1918, after three months service, Privte Stanley Alfred George Jones was admitted to hospital at Featherston Camp, suffering with influenza. S. A. G. Jones did not serve overseas. Stanley married Mary Elizabeth Scott in 1920. He died on 5 May 1967, aged 74 years. Mary died in 1974. They are buried together in the Burke’s Pass Cemetery. His brother, Ernest Arthur Rupert Jones, served in World War One.
