Biographical Notes

William John Grindell was born on 14 February 1880 at Geraldine, the third son of Thomas and Ellen (also known as Helen, née Jones) Grindell. Thomas and Ellen had married in 1872 in Gloucestershire, England. William was educated at the Geraldine Public School where, in March 1886, he received a prize for the “Below Standard I” children.

William married Lucy Hughes on 6 December 1906 at Geralidine, and their only child, Irene Susan Wilke Grindell, was born on 1 January 1914 at Geraldine. He was a carter at Geraldine when he enlisted on 7 June 1918 and named his wife as next-of-kin - Mrs Lucy Grindell, 418 Talbot Street, Geraldine. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. W. J. Grindell did not serve overseas.

He died on 20 October 1963 at Geraldine, aged 83 years, and was buried in the local Cemetery. Lucy died in 1971. His brother Charles also enlisted for war service.
