By 1914 the family was in New Zealand. In 1918 young Regianald was at Springbrook School, South Canterbury, Springbrook being the address of Reginald, senior, when he enlisted on 7 June 1918 at Timaru. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. A farmer, he named his wife as next-of-kin - - Mrs E. E. Gosden, Springbrook, Pareora, Timaru. R. C Gosden did not serve overseas.
