His parents were at Litchurch, Derbyshire, in 1881 with four daughters. One daugter had died prior to 1881 and another was born in 1881. By 1884 at least, the family was in Christchurch, New Zealand. Edward, junior, was educated at Christchurch West School, where he was rewarded for Standard III proficiency in 1892. He left at the age of fourteen to work for Beath & Co. Edward, senior, was a provision merhant. He died on 29 August 1885 at Christchurch and Mary Ann died on 11 June 1903. They are buried at Addington Cemetery. Edward Insley Garratt married Winifred May Clarkson, of Timaru, on 29 October 1913 at St Mary’s Church, Timaru. Lurlene Minnie was born on 29 June 1916 at Timaru and Mabelle Winifred (Mabbs) on 13 June 1918. A son was born some years later. A few months earlier in 1913 his sister, Minnie Garratt, had married Frederick Morgan, the youngest son of Robert Morgan of Timaru. Edward Insley Garratt was a warehouseman at Timaru when he enlisted on 7 June 1918 and named his wife as next-of-kin - Mrs W. M. Garratt, 10 Roslyn Terrace, Timaru. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. E. I. Garratt did not serve overseas. He died on 7 April 1963 at Wellington, aged 80. Winifred died in 1965 at Christchurch.
