Biographical Notes
Leslie Cromie was born on 5 July 1898 at Ashburton, the second son of John and Emma (née Jarrett) Cromie, who had married in Victoria, Australia and come to New Zealand in the mid-1890s. He was educated at Wakanui and Christchurch East schools before transferring to Waihao Downs School in mid-1908. At Waihao Downs he met with success – in 1909 a special prize and certificate for English and in 1911 3rd prize for Standard VI. He also passed the Standard VI Proficiency examination.
A labourer and single, he enlisted on 25 July 1918 at Timaru, naming his father as next-of-kin – Mr J. Cromie, Waihao Downs, South Canterbury. At that time, he was serving with the 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall.
Leslie married Mavis Alma Miller in 1924. They were to divorce a few years later. In 1936 he married Rona Gladys Williams. He died on 19 August 1969, aged 71 years, and was buried in Wharerangi Lawn Cemetery, Napier, with Rona who had died in 1966.
